Garage Door Opener Lights Blinking? What They Mean
Blinking lights are your opener’s way of telling you what’s wrong. Here’s how to read the most common signals on LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Craftsman openers — and what to do about each one.
Quick answers
The most common blinking-light signals
| What you see | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Opener light flashes about 10 times and the door won’t close | Safety sensors blocked or misaligned | Clear the beam, clean the lenses and line up the sensors |
| Wall control or opener light flashes when you press a remote | Lock or vacation mode is on | Turn off the lock button on the wall control |
| Opener light blinks and the door reverses for no clear reason | Binding door, travel limits or force settings | Check the door runs freely; have limits and force reset |
| Sensor light off or blinking | Sensor misaligned, damaged or a wiring fault | Re-aim the sensor; check wires for damage |
| Opener blinks and only works from the wall button | Remote or lock issue | Replace the remote battery or turn off lock mode |
Diagnostic codes
Reading diagnostic codes on newer LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers
LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Craftsman openers made after about 2012 show a two-part diagnostic code with the up and down arrow lights on the opener (near the learn button). Count the up-arrow flashes, then the down-arrow flashes.
- 1 up, 1 down: safety sensors aren’t installed, aren’t connected, or a wire may be cut.
- 1 up, 4 down: sensors are misaligned or blocked — realign until both sensor lights are steady.
- 1 up, 5 down: the door moves 6–8 inches, stops and reverses — often a binding door or a travel problem.
- 4 up, 1–4 down: the door stops or reverses for no clear reason — check the door runs freely, then reset the travel.
- 4 up, 6 down: the opener won’t close and the lights flash — another sensor alignment signal.
Codes vary by model and year, so check your opener’s manual for the exact meaning. When in doubt, call us with your opener’s brand and model and the flash pattern.
Other brands
Genie and other openers
Genie and other brands use their own flash patterns, usually on the powerhead or the sensors. The fixes are often the same: clear and realign the sensors, check the lock setting, and make sure the door runs freely. Your model’s manual lists its exact codes.
FAQ
Blinking opener lights FAQ
Why is my garage door opener light blinking 10 times?
On LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers, 10 flashes usually means the safety sensors are blocked or misaligned. Clear the beam and line up the sensors until both lights are steady.
Why is my garage door opener blinking and not working?
The most common causes are a sensor problem, the lock button being switched on, or the door binding. Check the sensors and the wall control first.
How do I stop my garage door opener from blinking?
Fix the problem it’s signaling — usually by realigning the sensors or turning off lock mode. The blinking stops once the fault clears.
Should I replace an opener that keeps blinking?
Not usually. Blinking points to a fixable fault. Replace the opener only if it’s old and the fault is a failed board or motor.
